Mind-Body Fitness
Over the passage of many centuries and eras, health matters are considered matters of absolute importance. Be it the prehistoric times, the recent past decades or the current state of affairs, health has always been a major concern for people of every race, caste, creed and time. Even though the concept of good health has changed constantly and so have the benchmarks (or yardsticks) for judging good health, the vitality of the role health plays in the course of life has not faded one notch and has instead amplified and multiplied even more tremendously.
In the prehistoric times, the sole purpose due to which people ate was survival. Another less important reason to eat was to keep their strength intact to carry on their occupation (which was most generally limited to farming and hunting) in order to earn a living. The interesting aspect about this second reason is the fact that it is also directly related to the first reason, which is survival as the carriage and continuity of the jobs was also done to survive through the course of life. However with the passage of time, man began to learn the importance of health and gradually discovered many more facets for the maintenance of good health besides eating. Before that the common concept was ‘the more you eat, the healthier you are’. This concept was conveniently supplanted by other ideologies, attributing to experience and learning, observation and conclusions derived from those observations.
It was then when the theory of exercise came into being. With the development of medicine and the advancement of science, simple workout techniques were devised to cure and overcome certain physical problems, the successful results of which further consolidated the reliability of their application for the same nature of problems in the future as well. It was not just the case of physical problems, which were a prime matter of concern for the masses. As a matter of fact, mental healing and psychological well-being was considered as imperative as were the prospects of attaining good physical health. At first, spiritual and religious techniques were derived to achieve this purpose of spiritual well-being. Some of them worked successfully while others did not generate the desired results. Later on many fitness routines were developed, which contributed to the maintenance of a sound physical health as well as a high level of spiritual healing. One of these fitness routines, the authenticity and acknowledgement is intact till date is yoga. Chiefly aiming to attain integration of the physical and psychological senses, yoga is just not a physical and mental fitness routine; it is a lifestyle, which focuses on every aspect and dimension of life.
Just like yoga, there is Tai Chi and Pilates, which also aim towards both kinds of benefits, physical and psychological. In the present world of today, physical fitness and mental fitness are found to have a direct relationship. That is, if one deteriorates, the other worsens too, if one dimension of health thrives, the other improves as well. In a similar manner, the importance of both physical fitness and mental fitness is equal and contributes towards the buildup of the spiritual dimension of health.
In the light of these facts, many exercise routines, following the example of yoga and Tai Chi, are aiming towards attaining both physical and mental health maintenance, instead of only focusing on physical or mental health alone, which was the past trend of many fitness routines. Presently the range of options are many, which suit a great many target markets with respect to age, gender, physical makeup and some other factors, which focus on both physical and mental fitness. The main point is to select the appropriate exercise routine, which not only gives equal importance to both physical and mental health but also is suitable for your preferences and personality.
