Pilates History

It was the fine work of Joseph H. Pilates (who lived during the era ranging from the year 1881 to 1967) that the comprehensive fitness routine of Pilates came into being. The introduction and further development of the very exercise regime took place during the decade of the 1920s when Joseph H. Pilates, who was of German origin and was a boxer and gymnast by profession, got motivated to work on his own physical and mental strength and improve his health after enduring the troubles and hassles of a sickly childhood. It was the history of Jose Pilates life, which actually led to the development of Pilates. His other sources of inspiration were many other fitness routines, which bear resemblance to Pilates in the current state of affairs such as yoga, martial arts, Zen meditation and many other fitness routines, which had an established and acknowledged historical importance. That was the beginning of the history of Pilates. The mechanism of Pilates revolves around practicing a unique sequence of body movements, which contribute towards developing a sound level of physical (relevant to the muscular system) and mental harmony. Hence with the efforts of Joseph Pilates history of Pilates slowly began to take shape.

The initial Pilates history had a somewhat raw nature. There was a certain polish, which was required to utilize the maximum benefits out of the sequence of movements, which were introduced by Joseph Pilates during the initial years of the history of Pilates. This polish was given by Joseph Pilates during the period while he was interning in England that took place during the First World War. He applied this polished fitness regimen on himself and few of his fellow internees. In accordance with the claims made by Joseph Pilates, this wellness routine played a great role in increasing their power of resistance against the Influenza epidemic. During his role as an orderly at an infirmary, Joseph Pilates introduced an innovative way of rigging springs on hospital beds. This helped the beds in offering a light degree of resistance exercises to patients who were bedridden. This gave rise to the development of Pilates equipment.

Later on the wife of Joseph Pilates opened a studio, which was located in close proximity to the New York City Ballet. This took place in the year 1926. Soon after many people were joining the studio and adopting the fitness routine of Pilates, trusting its ability to develop long and lean muscles along with an improved physique and posture. Few of the most acknowledged members of Joseph Pilates’ clientele were Martha Graham and even George Balanchine.

With this initial success, Joseph Pilates got encouraged to add a new facet to this development. At the end of the Second World War, he published a book called ‘Return to Life through Contrology’. In the book, Joseph Pilates illustrated his own personal philosophy about the entire mechanism of exercise. This literary piece became a source of inspiration for many students, who later on, opened their own studios. Some of them even gave certain adjustments to the original Pilates regimen in accordance with the demands of time. Hence the popularity of Pilates spread steadily yet on a consistent basis.

Yet the major dose of acknowledgement and popularity came in the decade of the 1990s when the mind-body fitness movement occurred. The baby boomers were the ones who started it by putting forth their demand of seeking lighter and gentler methods of exercise and fitness. Along with the renewed popularity of yoga and tai chi, both of which were ancient exercises, it was Pilates, which tasted phenomenal success as a result of this movement.

In the current world of fitness and exercise, Pilates holds a paramount status of its own, which is respected and acknowledged equally by its followers as well as the followers of other fitness routines.
